SUMMER PROGRAM

Inequitable access to high-quality academic and enrichment opportunities in the summer substantially contributes to the opportunity gap for low-income children.

SUMMER LEARNING LOSS

National research has found an alarming disparity between school age low-income youth and their more affluent peers when it comes to summer learning.

Children from low-income families are more likely to experience cumulative “summer learning loss”— falling behind on reading and mathematics skills over summer break - as a result of limited access to high-quality summer programs, while children from higher income families make gains.

The aim of Horizons is to mitigate disparities for under-resourced youth.

Our summer program includes high-quality core academics with instruction in STEAM, health and fitness, and cultural enrichment. We provide confidence-building challenges, social-emotional development, and opportunities to build self-esteem. We provide nutritious meals and snacks which are critical to physical well-being and academic development of students over the summer who are not in school to receive meals.

Summer Program Highlights:

  • Academic enrichment in math and language arts, including a reading specialist

  • Swim instruction at least 3X per week

  • Music instruction for all students

  • Daily nutritious meals

  • Social-emotional support in the classroom

  • Transportation to and from the program

  • Field trips to a variety of San Diego’s cultural and scenic locations

Swim

Swimming is an integral part of the summer program and a unique aspect of the Horizons learning strategy. In learning to swim, students do more than master an important skill; they also learn strategies for tackling fears and overcoming challenges. The resulting self-confidence and resilience foster success in and outside of school.

Swimming is a cornerstone of the Horizons program because it is far more than a life-saving skill. Learning to swim:

  • Teaches resilience and strategies to overcome fears and obstacles

  • Inspires children to adopt a healthy lifestyle

  • Introduces a competitive sport

  • Teaches skills for summer employment

  • Is FUN!
